Given a start point selected by the user, OSERoad relies on a unique technology to generate a collection of RDE-compatible routes. Once generated, the RDE trips can easily be exported as speed and elevation profiles into world-class leader simulation suite or even custom simulation tools. For on-road testing, itineraries can also be exported directly to a GPS using the popular *.gpx file format.

The performance encapsulated in a scalable cloud based platform allows our partners to use a single tool accross their different teams. This guarantees a seamless transition from simulation to real world validation, allowing to continuously yet efficiently fine-tune the decisions at every step of the development process. Real Driving Emissions : The New Order.

In 2017, Europe became the first region in the world to introduce a new set of regulations truly able to revolutionize the way light duty vehicles are tested and designed. This follows years of critisms toward the previous protocol, namely the NEDC, introduced in the 1980s. By combining the so-called WLTP driving cycles together with the introduction of the RDE framework it fundamentally changed the pollutant and fuel comsumption approvals of light duty vehicles.

This regulatory revision brings drastic technical, economical and strategic changes in the automotive world, aimed at achieving a dual objective:

  • Drastically reducing NOx and fine particles emissions in cities,
  • Shrinking the gap between type approved emissions and their corresponding in-use values.

  • Under operating conditions defined by EU law, the WLTP laboratory test is used to measure the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of passenger cars, on a common driving cycle reference.
    For its part, the RDE relies on an open-road driving test that serves to confirm laboratory tests results in real life. It offers the guarantee that cars deliver low pollutant emissions, not only in the laboratory but also on the road.

    RDE practicalities.

    During a RDE test, an operator drives the vehicle on public roads while dedicated Portable Emission Measuring Systems, also known as PEMS, monitor in real time the key pollutants levels such as NOx. A legislative set of boundary conditions defines whether or not the trip is RDE compatible, depending on the operating conditions explored. In fact, for 90 to 120 minutes, the latter must explores an exhaustive range of driving situations including:

  • urban, rural and motorway roads,
  • low and high vehicle dynamics,
  • low and high altitudes,
  • up and down-hill driving,
  • year-round temperatures and,
  • additional vehicle payload when appropriate.

    The fact that violating any of the mandated RDE criteria will result in a void test puts a great emphasis on determining a route that bears the right characteristics. In practise, as each iteration of the test takes a substantial amount of time, engineers wants to minimise the uncertainty that unforeseen events such as traffic or road construction lead to not meeting the RDE requirements. Another additional constraint is that prototype vehicle testing is often conducted away from the car manufacturers technical centers. This generates a continuous need for determing new routes in new locations, that maximises the chances to meet RDE compatibility requirements. OSERoad was created to meet this demand. As a product, it emerged from working closely with car manufacturers engineering teams in the early stages of the RDE framework introduction. Since then, we have pushed the boundaries even further in order for more people to benefit from this technology.


    The first online real RDE cycles generator.

    We wanted to empower our users wherever they are testing on the planet so we designed OSERoad as an online tool with simplicity, performance and usability in mind.

    The website provides a familiar Google Maps-like user experience for interactive map exploration: zoom in/out/pan and a simple click allows the user to choose the start point of his next RDE trips. Once the user has selected a start point on the map, our virtual driver algorithm explores all the routes in the region in a systematic yet incredibly efficient manner. At the end of the analysis, the user gets access to a collection of the most likely RDE-compliant trips from his start point. They can easily be exported either:

  • As speed and elevation profiles into world-class leader simulation suite or custom simulation tools,
  • As GPS traces using the versatile *.gpx file format, ready for on-road testing with PEMS.

  • The number of RDE-compatible routes around the selected location naturally depends on the roads layout and the local topography but OSERoad performs all the calculations on a scalable Cloud platform. This allows to contain the typical computation time between a minute to less than an hour.

    It was obvious that to reach this level of performance and design a product that would truly add value to the RDE stakeholders accross the automotive industry, we needed to liaise with as many experts as possible to enhance our comprehension of the regulation as well as understand their true need. It was not an easy task to gather so many people around the table in the early stage of the RDE framework definition but designing the unique technology that powers OSERoad, side by side with the leading experts in the fields, made a genuine difference.

    Today, OSERoad allows our partners to use a single tool throughout their development process and guarantees a seamless transition from simulation to real world validation.
